Teaching your children about money

What do you do to teach your children about money and what it is used for? I know my nephew thinks money is a piece of plastic that Mommy and Daddy swipe at the counter, so I got him a coin bank so he can understand a little bit. On The Simple Dollar, a blogger asked about allowance and when to start. When is a child ready for an allowance? There seem to be lots of good comments for the age range su… Continue

Simple budgets

CNNMoney has a great article with three simple ways to make a budget and stick to it. The first helps you split up your paycheck into recurring stable bills and variable bills. The second has you eliminate one large item completely and then not worry about it. And the third has you work with a friend who is your referee. Has anyone tried these methods or know another one? http://monContinue

Great things about the new credit card law

I know many people are wondering just how the changes President Obama signed into law will affect them and their credit cards. Bankrate put together a great article on the changes and what it means for the average person. Has anyone been affected by rate increases or changes in their credit card recently? http://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/8-major-benefits-of-new-credit-card-law-1.asContinue

Scams to watch for!

In these times when everyone is trying to stay afloat, an email or letter promising you money for doing nothing sounds great. Be careful and extremely wary of any company that asks you to deposit a check and then mail them part of it back. Most of these checks bounce and you then have to pay the entire amount of the check and any fees that accrue. A legitimate sweepstakes will not ask you to mail money back to them or pay a fee before the rest of the money is sent to you. If you have any questio… Continue

E-Statements: What a Great Idea!

For many people, the time between receiving their statement and knowing when payments are due is too short. With E-Statements, you receive the statement 5-7 days earlier than the paper, mailed statement and have more time to plan payments. Another great part of E-Statements is that you don't have to worry about the papers being lost in the mail. This security feature is great since you never have to worry about getting your statement when you are on vacation. Most places will even let you try E… Continue

Extended Insurance Increase

Bill Number S. 896 was signed into effect on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. The passing of this bill extends the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) $250,000 share and deposit insurance coverage for credit unions through December 31, 2013. This is great news for the credit union industry! Originally this was to expire at the end of 2009, but know it will continue through 2013! Our credit union also has Excess Shares Insurance which insures an additional $250,000 for a total of $500,000! Continue

Funny article about credit unions

The Finanical Brand posted this article last summer about the most common words in credit union names. We are not guilty (anymore)! Teachers is on the list, and since we were "Columbus (Ohio) Teachers Federal Credit Union" we would have been an offender! I do understand why the names are the most popular since they demonstrate a credit union's dedication to their community. http://thefinancialbrand.com/2Continue

Secured Credit Cards

One option for people in today's shaky credit market is a secured credit card. To do this, a person deposits the amount of money they want their line of credit to be into a savings account. These funds are placed on hold and the consumer does not have access to them. This allows people with no credit or poor credit to build a history of payments on a revolving loan and build their credit score. http://www.bankraContinue
